Where We’re Going

If there is a single underlying strand to be drawn from an analysis of the Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP) operation over the years it is that the power of culture must never be underestimated or ignored.

Despite the odds – the cultural and physical “unreachability” of the Loita Maasai – ILIDP has been effective in delivering services and improving the community’s livelihood.

The best and most evident result that Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP) has achieved has been to set a people off on the development road, which they have to walk themselves. ILIDP has helped to draw the road map to development. The challenge now is to ensure that the Loita Maasai assume full and direct control of the process, and to enable them to do so. This will involve the following:

  • Generating, documenting and sharing our knowledge
  • Fine-tuning the Pastoralists Community Development Association (PCDA) concept:
We recognize the necessity for continuous capacity assessment and development to enable the PCDAs to address emerging challenges. There is also a need for an appropriate legal arrangement to clarify the relationship between PCDAs and ILIDP. [Read more about PCDA concept]
