Socio-Economic Development

Livestock Development

Livestock is still a priority – the foundation and mainstay of the Loita livelihood. For the Maasai people, livestock constitute the source and indicator of wealth and expression of cultural identity and loyalty. Livestock are also a medium of exchange, source of food and symbol of relationships, and have a significant role in indigenous spirituality (for example, in the performance of rituals). more

Promoting food security and sound environmental management

This project component was formulated to help address problems related to household food insecurity, poor nutrition and health, basically to complement the local pastoral production system. The ILIDP initiated self-awareness and motivation seminars and practical demonstrations to encourage the Loita Maasai to undertake small-scale subsistence farming.

Income generating activities

The organization implemented a number of activities to generate the revenue needed to sustain its running costs, while enabling the community to access some essential goods and services. The activities include the livestock breeding farm, a duka (shop), a dawa shop (livestock medication stores or veterinary assistance shops), a canteen, a lorry for transport services and a motor vehicle maintenance shop, and a conference centre. These initiatives are also intended to instil an entrepreneurial spirit within the Loita Maasai and to create sources of gainful employment, particularly among the youth. more
