What we do
Political Activism and Awareness
It is very important for a community to participate actively and fight to determine the politics of its area – especially in a country like Kenya where politics determines the allocation of national resources by the central and local governments. Ten years ago, the Loita Maasai had little or no influence at all over the politics of Narok District, where they were considered an insignificant political minority.
Over that decade, however, Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP) has invested a lot of resources in civic education, leadership training and lobbying skills training. As a result, the 20,000-member community is now aware of its political and civil rights and its 8,000 registered voters are no longer considered an insignificant political minority considering their block voting patterns.
The community has learnt to survive politically by forming coalitions with other communities with similar interests in politics, a technique that has boosted their political bargaining powers. ILIDP, local councillors, local area provincial administration and other leaders have become very active in agitating for the allocation of resources from both central and local governments for the development of Loita.
