Who We Are

Project leader

A community-rooted, owned and managed non profit organization registered in Kenya, Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme's (ILIDP's) mission is to build the capacity of the Loita Maasai to manage their own resources – human, land and livestock – for their own development. In empowering the Loita Maasai, the short-term objective is to alleviate poverty and improve the socio-economic status of the community by promoting development initiatives that are relevant to Loita culture and consequently safeguard their indigenous spirituality and cultural identity.

We endeavour to achieve our mission and objectives through the following core interventions:

Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP) Program Focus Areas

  • Facilitation and or provision of technical support to the Pastoralists Community Development Associations (PCDAs) (and other relevan
    t community Based Organizations CBOs) in areas as inter-Pastoralists Community Development Association (PCDA) coordination, external linkages, Planning Budgeting Monitoring Evaluation (PBME), financial management and administration, etc
  • Funds Administration and or Grants management for those funds that ILIDP shall mobilise on behalf of the Pastoralists Community Development Associations (PCDAs) especially for the bigger more demanding donors
  • Undertake certain social –cultural roles e.g. act as an Umbrella Organisation for Loita Maasai for societal unity, cultural preservation as a cradle of development, conflict management & resolution etc
  • Undertake certain special programs as Drought Cycle Management (DCM), Farm Management and running of the Community Training centre
  • To undertake research and documentation processes and institutionalise learning
  • Undertake institutional development for itself in line with the change process
  • Lobby & advocacy

To provide support and quality capacity building services to the Loita Maasai to enable them to mobilize the necessary resources, services and skills for securing their livelihoods and alleviating poverty sustainably

Organisational culture

Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP) desires to develop a culture that minimizes bureaucratic procedures in favor of rapid, proactive and innovative action. We wish to concretize our decentralization process. Consultation and participation is the visible style by which we arrive at decisions. We insist on the highest standards of integrity, accountability and transparency from all staff. We will work in collaboration with others that contribute to our vision also in an effort to share information and learning. We ensure that the presence of women and their views is in an equal part of the organization at all levels. We hold ourselves individually and collectively accountable for the promotion of this internal culture.

Identity, Legitimacy and Mandate

The legitimacy and mandate of Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP) derives from the community, through the Council of Elders and other organized community institutions. The Loita community strongly identifies itself with the ownership and management of Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP).



Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP) has won the support of the Loita Maasai because, one, it has been able to incorporate Maasai culture into its governance and management practices. And two, Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP) has promoted development initiatives that are relevant to the Loita Maasai and their livelihood. This has enabled the organization to gain the trust, confidence and understanding of the Loita community. Consequently, Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP) has acquired a cultural status within the Loita Maasai. The organization even participates in some cultural rituals performed by the community as a corporate entity. In short, the Loita Maasai and the Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Programme (ILIDP) are synonymous.
